Spring Home Maintenance Tips

Today's home maintenance tip is on one of the culprits of water damage to a home in the spring.  During the spring rain and snow melt, we get a few calls from water damage in a basement from water runoff.  The major things to look for around your home are first to make sure that your yard slopes away from your house and window wells.  If the slope is correct, it can save you from a number of other potential water sources as well.  Second, in some areas it may be necessary to build a proper storm drainage area in the yard.  Third, being aware of water runoff paths and securing your home with sandbags or other means to divert the water away from the home is also imperative to prevention.  For more prevention tips, call the ARS location nearest you!

Laminate Flooring Dilemmas

Laminate floors are inexpensive and can look really great in a home.  With all the new style choices available, a homeowner can find a floor that will complement their kitchen or other space.  Although laminate floors are durable and look nice, we discourage homeowners from using them in bathroom or laundry rooms. When water is on them for a substantial amount of time, they can soak up water and swell.  When this happens, laminate floors are hard to repair or replace because of the difficulty in finding an exact match.  This can lead to more headache for a homeowner. For other suggestions or questions on home maitenance and water damage restoration, please call our office.

Brrrr Bear Lake- ARS Jobs in Rich County

Bear Lake is a hot spot in Utah and Idaho for year round recreational activities.  Just up Logan Canyon from Cache Valley, Bear Lake has grown in the last few years with an influx  of cabins along with year round residents.  Many of the cabins in the area are used on and off throughout the year.  Just like any full-time home, they are susceptible to fire and water damage, but because of length of time between use, the damage can sometimes be more prevalent because the water sits.  In the last couple of weeks, we have responded to a handful of burst pipes and other water damage problems from Garden City, UT to Fish Haven, ID (all in the Bear Lake area).  Right now we are currently working on a couple of cabins along with the Bear Lake State Park Marina office.  There are some ways to prevent water damage in a cabin which includes turning off the main water while no one is there and using anti-freeze in the drains.  Taking precautions while not using the cabin

Water Damage From Freezing Pipes

Northern Utah, South Eastern Idaho, and Wyoming are all regions that are susceptible to spells of freezing weather.  Sometimes this freezing weather can come as early as the beginning of October, leaving homeowners unprepared.  One way to prevent water damage due to frozen hose bibs is to make sure that all hoses are disconnected from any outside faucets.  If building a home or remodeling, make sure that pipes leading to outside faucets are oriented so that water can be drained out completely.  Another thing you can do is install insulated covers for the hose bib.  These are a couple of things you can do this fall and winter to prepare your home against possible water damage.  If water damage does occur this winter, give us a call and we'll restore your home and your peace of mind.
